How to Choose Coilovers for Your BMW: E30 to G8X Buyer's Guide

Step 1: Confirm your chassis and generation
BMW reuses model names across very different platforms, so start by confirming the actual chassis code, not just "3 Series" or "M3." An E46 M3 and an E90 M3 share a name but nothing else structurally. Thunder Lane's BMW kits are chassis-specific — spring lengths, mount hardware, and valving baselines are built around the exact platform, not a generic "3 Series" spec.

Step 2: Decide between TL-ONE and TL-PRO
TL-ONE is a single-adjustable (20-click rebound) system built around 46mm monotube dampers. It's the right call for street/track dual-duty cars, HPDE, and autocross — real adjustability without a second circuit you'll rarely touch.
TL-PRO steps up to true 3-way adjustment — rebound, plus independent low-speed (34-click) and high-speed (22-click) compression, delivered through remote reservoirs. It's built for Time Attack, hill climb, and wheel-to-wheel racing, where you're tuning chassis platform and impact response separately as track conditions and tire compound change session to session. If you're not sure which side of that line your driving falls on, TL-ONE is the safer default — you can always step up later, and every kit is fully rebuildable and re-valvable.
Step 3: Understand what's standard across every BMW kit
Regardless of chassis or tier, every BMW coilover from Thunder Lane includes:

Step 4: Talk to us about spring rates and valving before you order
We don't publish a fixed spring rate chart for BMW the way we do for some platforms, because BMW's weight and grip requirements vary too much chassis to chassis and build to build — a G8X M3 running on 305-width tires needs a different baseline than an E30 on 200TW rubber. Every BMW kit is built to order: we confirm your tire, ride height target, and intended use before production, and valving is selected to match.
What to expect after ordering
Every Thunder Lane BMW kit is hand-assembled in Poland with a 4–6 week lead time. Coverage is a 6-month warranty — void for track damage, covering unreasonable wear and defects only. And if you're racing, ask about our contingency program; competing drivers can earn product credit for results.
Which BMW chassis is right for which use case?
As a rough starting point: E30 and E36 owners building lightweight autocross or vintage racing cars typically lean TL-ONE unless they're chasing series records. E46 M3 and E9X owners split fairly evenly between TL-ONE for street/track cars and TL-PRO for dedicated Time Attack builds. F8X and G8X owners — typically the newest, heaviest, most powerful cars in the lineup — skew toward TL-PRO more often, simply because the extra adjustability matters more as power and grip go up.
