Track Alignment & Camber Plate Basics for BMW Coilover Setups
Installing coilovers changes what's possible with your alignment — lower ride heights and adjustable spring perches shift your baseline geometry, and on chassis where Thunder Lane includes camber plates, you get a meaningfully wider adjustment range than stock top mounts allow. This is a general primer on what that means and how to think about it, not a substitute for a proper corner-weight and alignment session.
What camber plates actually do
A stock BMW top mount holds the strut at a fixed angle relative to the chassis. Camber plates replace that fixed mount with an adjustable one, letting you dial in additional negative camber (or reduce it) independent of ride height. On Thunder Lane kits, camber plates are included where the platform supports them, paired with spherical bearing top mounts for precise, repeatable response as that angle changes.
Why this matters more once you've lowered the car: dropping ride height on a fixed-geometry suspension changes your camber curve as a side effect, usually in a direction you didn't choose. Camber plates let you correct for that and then tune further — independently of how low the car sits.
Why track alignment differs from street alignment
Street alignment specs are built around even tire wear over 40,000+ miles of mostly straight-line driving. Track alignment is built around maximizing contact patch during hard cornering, where the car is rarely traveling in a straight line at all. That's why a track-focused setup typically runs more negative camber than a street spec would tolerate — the tire is loaded on its outside edge in a corner, and camber keeps more of the contact patch on the ground exactly when you need it most.
The trade-off is straight-line tire wear and slightly reduced braking grip on dead-straight stops. For a dedicated track car that's an easy trade. For a dual-duty street/track BMW, it's a balance worth discussing with whoever's setting your alignment — which is part of why we confirm intended use before building your kit in the first place.
Toe and caster matter too, not just camber
Camber gets most of the attention because camber plates are the visible upgrade, but toe and caster both affect how a BMW behaves once you've added adjustable suspension. Toe influences turn-in response and straight-line stability; caster affects steering feel and how camber changes through the range of steering input. None of these settings exist in isolation — a good alignment shop tunes them together based on how you actually drive the car, not off a single generic "track spec" number pulled from a forum.

Rather than chasing a specific camber number because it's what someone else's E46 runs, start with your intended use — the same information we use to valve your kit — and have an alignment shop familiar with track setups dial the car in from there.
