If you're cross-shopping Corvette C5/C6 suspension and you're new to the platform, one detail in our product descriptions probably stood out: both Thunder Lane Corvette kits replace the rear transverse leaf spring with true coil springs. That's not a minor footnote — it's a fundamental change to how the rear suspension works, and it's worth understanding before you decide which kit fits your build.

What the factory setup actually is

The C5 and C6 Corvette ship from the factory with a single transverse leaf spring mounted across the rear of the car, doing the spring duty for both rear wheels simultaneously, paired with separate dampers. It's a lightweight, low-profile design that GM used for packaging and weight reasons — and for a lot of street driving, it works fine.

For serious suspension tuning, though, a shared leaf spring is a compromise. Because one spring is doing the job for both sides of the car, your ability to independently tune each corner's spring rate, and to get a genuinely predictable motion ratio at each wheel, is limited compared to a setup where each wheel has its own dedicated spring.
